LISTEN: Youth Fight the School to Prison Pipeline from Baltimore to Philadelphia
Featured MMP Audio
From Baltimore to Philadelphia, those in power are trying to cut funding from our schools and expand prisons. But youth from across the country are coming together to fight back and demand our human right to education.
In this piece Maryland Shaw and Shaquille Carbon from Baltimore Algebra Project spoke out on the impact of the school to prison pipeline in Baltimore. They talk about the school budget cuts and how the state wants to use the money to build a new youth prison. They also talk about their organizing work to stop the prison from being built and restore funding for education.
Shaquille, Maryland and other Baltimore Algebra Project members were a part of the recent 2,000 person "FUND OUR SCHOOLS, NOT PRISONS!" march, organized by the Campaign for Nonviolent Schools.
This report was produced by Ericka Johnson for On Blast, the Philadelphia Student Union's youth-produced radio show.
