New Media Technology Charter School being probed for fiscal mismanagement
New Media Technology Charter School in Northwest Philly is facing a probe as it's charter is up for renewal based on article in today's Philadelphia Inquirer. New Media is a clear example of how lack of accountability and oversight inside our school district can have devastating effects on our communities. The school district by law is supposed to keep tabs and oversee all schools that are being run my outside providers (EMO's) and charter schools. Do they? Where were they when New Media failed to make payments to the state teachers' retirement system for more than a year? Where were they when security guards where teaching in the classroom? Where were they when the CEO of New Media was making sevaral hundred thousand dollars off of our tax money? Meanwhile, the citizens of Philadelphia have to endure tax hikes!
A few weeks ago the school district approved a school reform plan, Imagine 2014, which plans to expand the charter school model and more outside providers to the lowest performing schools in Philly. These schools are low performing because they have long been ignored by the district and the reform being offered is nothing new to Philadelphia. In fact, this is a reform that has failed us over and over again. We are tired of experiments on our schools and communities, we want what works, and unless the district can ensure us they have accountability measures in place for the existing EMO's and charter schools inside of Philadelphia they should not expand a failing reform to our communities.
