WATCH: Children's March to Save Education
Today, in a fight to resist Governor Corbett's proposed cutbacks to Pennsylvania's public education budget, a large crowd rallied in Harrisburg, PA on the steps of the state capitol building. In the midst of these cutbacks there are also plans to increase funding to state prisons, and to implement a voucher system which would shift education dollars from public schools into the hands of private companies.
Students, teachers, parents, politicians and community leaders gathered in a struggle to take back education and express their outrage at this tremendous injustice, which would deal a crippling blow to poor and working class families.
One major rallying point was The Campaign For Nonviolent Schools (CNS), a coalition of youth led groups, who came out strong to deliver their powerful message. Through their platform for nonviolent schools, CNS aims to put student voices at the forefront of education, and to destroy the school-to-prison pipeline that has begun to define our public education system. Throughout the day, students from CNS demanded the right to a fully-funded, high quality education system that puts decision making in the hands of students, parents and educators.
